Description pzgyuanf 2007-05-14 12:36:46 UTC
as describe in the wiki: http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/FaqMessagesInEnglish

my defualt locale is zh_CN, when I change the multi-laguage release 5.5.1
default locale to '--locale en', the tab lable of welcome page is error, the
famous 'small box' is regarded as font error in JVM.

and the FileChoiceDialog (try to open project dialog) is the same case.

Reassigned to "ide" as I do not know the proper component for such issues.
Comment 2 pzgyuanf 2007-05-16 12:28:45 UTC

reassign to welcome for welcome issue ...
Comment 5 Ken Frank 2007-05-30 03:33:08 UTC
pzquuanf -

can you provide more detail and some attached images
for each of the 3 situations you mention ?

- tab table of welcome page - are you using same user dir as you did when you
ran in zh ?
and what is the error of the welcome page tab ?

for the small box, font error, can you supply a gif ?
also, when you run with startup argument --fontsize 14, do you still see this
problem ?

for the file choice dialog, can you provide a gif to show the problem ?

Thanks.

Sorry, I've given the broken link, this is the correct url to refer this
problem: http://pprun.blogspot.com/2007/05/netbeans-locale.html

>- tab table of welcome page - are you using same user dir as you did when you
>ran in zh ?

Do yes.

>and what is the error of the welcome page tab ?
The text of the tab, in English is 'Welcome', you can see the result in the
attachment.

>for the small box, font error, can you supply a gif ?

Again, see the attachment.

>also, when you run with startup argument --fontsize 14, do you still see this
problem ?
Currently, I'm at workplace and have no multi-lang release installed. I'll
append the result after I got (at home).

>for the file choice dialog, can you provide a gif to show the problem ?
see the attachment.

Comment 8 Ken Frank 2007-05-30 04:08:41 UTC
try using a new userdir when running with the --locale en
and see if welcome tab says Welcome

this might be that it keeps the text of it in userdir instead of from product.

in any case the square boxes is a problem; I saw recently another issue about
possible fix for this; I will investigate.

followup questions

1. run with a new userdir using --locale en and tell us what you see

2. I assume you are running a localized windows - arent those words on the left side
of the open project window from windows itself ? And that normally they would be
showing the locale characters ok, but perhaps due to the issue, since nb is
being told
via --locale en option, that its in en locale, that those characters might not
be viewed
properly.

That means option '--laf javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel' would help out
the Open Project Dialog problem.

I'll try it.

Then, if it was really this case, the bug should be assigned to Swing/JDK, right?
Because although I run on localized windows, '--locale en' should lead it to
pick up the en text.

to pzqyuanf - from your questions below:

comment - I'm not sure about that option, but if you can try with the new userdir
using --userdir option and see if some/all of the problems are gone, that will
help.

comment - yes, for mesages from the ide itself, it should. But am not sure that
would
apply to messages seen from appserver or other tools that might show their msgs
in the ide output window or other places, since don't think the --locale option
applies
to those other tools.

Hi ken.frank,

Sorry for my delay response.

I've got the tests, the result is:
1. new userdir can resolve the Welcome problem, but the problem of Open Project
was still here.

2. It's fine to use '--laf javax.swing.plaf.metal.MetalLookAndFeel' option, but
it seems no point in this change because this LookAndFeel is so different from
the Window(XP)LookAndFeel. there's no left navigator at all.

see the attached png image.

can you look at 103908; I think its related to this one
about the square boxes and is supposed to be fixed in
October, but I dont know if it was fixed for nb6 or for 55 or 551.

Would you be able to try it using current nb6, like milestone 9/java one
preview from netbeans.org ?

If its not ok there then it seems that that one might need to be reopened
if it is actually related to this one.

For the welcome part of it, I think it might not be a problem
since can be better to assume a different user dir for running
in another locale, but if this is not ok, then at least lets file a
separate issue on that part, since its not related to the square boxes.

Was NetBeans6.0 multi-lang build out?

The default is 'en' and we are talking about 'multi-lang' release and the
problem relevant to change the default setting, that's change the default locale
used in 'multi-lang' release.

Anyway, I'll try it as soon as the NetBeans 6.0 multi-lang
build/milestone/release is out.

Regards.

---> I think since the words from the file chooser on your gif are from windows os
and not netbeans, that if you try using netbeans 6, it does not need to be a
translated
release to do it.

it can be downloaded from

Yes, you are right. The default locale 'en' can show the JFileChooser correctly
and the Chinese words.

Then, what's wrong with the multi-lang release? Because it seems like the
problem shouldn't be relevant to NetBeans.

FYI. I've attatched the NetBeans6.0 screenshot.

BTW. I've used NetBeans6.0 for quite a long time.
Comment 20 Ken Frank 2007-06-08 03:45:00 UTC
I don't think its about ml netbeans 55, but about a font setting situation that
impacted this situation, that I now think was fixed for nb6 but still relates
to 55/551.

It might be related to some/all of the 3 other issues mentioned in comments to
this issue or maybe another one - it involves the need to specify a font that is
not mapped to jdk font since it had better viewing in certain situations,
but in case like what you have - where in other locale but with --locale en,
there was a problem with the square boxes -- so this was fixed so that it
would not happen in this situation.

now i'm completely lost:) - is there any bug or not?
Comment 22 Ken Frank 2007-07-04 17:27:07 UTC
From looking at the notes and communication with filer, I don't think there is an issue
anymore but lets wait for confirmation from filer.
