[ BUILD # : 200809031401 ] [ JDK VERSION : 1.6.0_07 ] After installing the Extra Ruby Colors, I selected the Aloha color scheme. After doing so, the preview pane has a light background (white) but the actual background color for the Aloha color scheme is dark gray.
Reproducible, there is no need to install Extra Ruby color. It's enough to change background color for language: All Languages, category: Default -> the preview is not updated
While it appears that the fix to update the background has been added, the ability to reverse the process doesn't appear to work. Open the Fonts Dialog. Using the Themes pull down, select the last item on the list. This has a dark background. Once selected, the preview updates to the dark background. Now use the Themes pull down and select the default NetBeans theme (first on list). Once selected, the fonts update to the original color, but the background doesn't.
It appears as of 200810181401, we have reverted to no longer getting background updates in the preview window.

Still reproducible.
*** Issue 155692 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue. ***
This is still an issue with daily as of 200903241535. Preview window is unusable for at least 2 of the color combos because of this (they end up showing yellow on white which is effectively unviewable).
This issue is now 1 year old. Is it planned to be fixed in NetBeans 6.8?

Not reproducible in 6.9 trunk, probably fixed.
I just reproduced this in 201005122200 so it is definitely not fixed. It appears that someone fixed it in trunk, then regressed it at a later point.
Not reproducible in 7.1 trunk, probably fixed. Product Version: NetBeans IDE Dev (Build 201109110600) Java: 1.6.0_26; Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 20.1-b02
