Description mclaassen 2005-09-08 16:09:00 UTC
I much prefer the old behavior of the find dialog in 4.0 and am starting to
become increasing frustrated with the new interface. In particular, two
things have changed that I would like addressed.

The first behavior, that has been in NB for as long as I have used it, was
that after a search in the source editor the find dialog disappeared. I am
trying to get it into my procedure to always hit the close immediately after a
find. There could at least be a checkbox preference on the dialog to tell it
to automatically close. Having to do close it after every find is getting a
bit old...especially since it was so efficient before.

My old routine was to do a search, (the find box would close) and then I would
F3 / Shift-F3 around until I found what I was looking for. Now I have to move
the dialog out of way or close it. (The dialog remembers its location in that
session, but not between sessions.)

---

The second bevavior is on find dialog when searching through multiple files.
It seems to remember the last text search I did in the source editor. I often
search for locally modified files and for a long time wondered why my searches
were not working. After much frustration, I finally noticed the * on
the "Full Text" tab and realized while my searches were coming up empty. I
surprised to find the random text segment from a previous source editor search
in this dialog.

So far in the several weeks that I have been using nb4.1, this feature has
never been useful to me. The first thing I do when I do a "Find in Files" is
delete the text or overwrite it.

I appreciate the constant effort to improve on previous features, but I much
prefer it the way it used to be. If you want to keep these behaviors, please
bring back options to enable the previous semantics.

Regarding the change in the dialog for searching over multiple files:

This change of behaviour was considered as an improvement and from what I heard
and read, people mostly appreciate this change or at least do not have any
objections. So I do not plan to revert the change to the previous behaviour.
What I consider is making this behaviour optional (but still enabled by default).

Regarding the change in the dialog for searching in the text editor:

Please file a separate issue (component "editor", subcomponent "search"). If you
have difficulties filing issues, I will file the issue for you.

Nothing to fix according to the last comment from 2005 ;)
Please check the current behavior.
