This seems to happen when using the zip builds. Also, following the exception the server drops out on restart and is accompanied by NPE Null Server Instance Properties.
Run with -J-Dorg.netbeans.core.startup.level=100 and attach generated messages.log please.
Tried today with yesterdays zip build 236 but it did not happen today. Tried again with today's installer build 02060003 and it did not happen. I'll keep using the flag in case it does.
was able to reproduce using trunk build 261 [netbeans-hudson-trunk-261-javaee.zip] attaching exception image and messages.log. The ide was run using -J-Dorg.netbeans.core.startup.level=100

I've added more logging to the probably source of the problem. Please rerun your tests with additional logging parameter: -J-Dorg.netbeans.core.projects.level=100 attach new log and reopen. changeset: 66442:da67606450c8 parent: 66004:373b81870403 user: Jaroslav Tulach <jtulach@netbeans.org> date: Fri Feb 08 11:15:37 2008 +0100 summary: Adding more logging to track 126521
For those who cannot wait for production build, the change is integrated in http://konik-z2.czech.sun.com:8080/hudson/job/NB-Core-Build/52/
Reproduced using http://konik-z2.czech.sun.com:8080/hudson/job/NB-Core-Build/52/ attaching new messages.log and screen shot. reposing the ticket.

I also tried the binary from this build http://konik-z2.czech.sun.com:8080/hudson/job/NB-Core-Build/52/ with -J- Dorg.netbeans.core.projects.level=100 I just opened the IDE, did nothing and waited a little while. The IllegalArgumentException error window showed up and after a little while the NullPointerException error window showed up as well. The entire IDE was messed up. My message log is exactly same as the attachment id=56359 created by vchellasamy. Adding me to the cc list.
I tried hard to reproduce - created web project, added jsf pages, switched the views, added server, created ejb project etc. Nothing. Please, try to reproduce with the latest build/fresh userdir with the command line switch. Attach the whole messages.log to this issue. Do you import a settings from older userdir? In the log I can see other exceptions/assertions maybe they are connected somehow? INFO [org.netbeans.editor] java.lang.NullPointerException: null AnnotationType for:org-netbeans-modules-editor-java-overrides at org.netbeans.editor.AnnotationTypes.getType(AnnotationTypes.java:317) at org.netbeans.editor.AnnotationDesc.updateAnnotationType(AnnotationDesc.java:180) GRAVE [global] java.lang.AssertionError at org.netbeans.modules.xml.retriever.catalog.Utilities._getDocument(Utilities.java:529) at org.netbeans.modules.xml.retriever.catalog.Utilities.access$000(Utilities.java:104) INFO: Invalid DeploymentManager: null java.lang.IllegalStateException: Invalid DeploymentManager: null at org.netbeans.modules.j2ee.sun.share.configbean.SunONEDeploymentConfiguration.getResourceConfigurator(SunONEDeploymentConfiguration.java:771) at org.netbeans.modules.j2ee.sun.share.configbean.SunONEDeploymentConfiguration.getDatasources(SunONEDeploymentConfiguration.java:1663)
lhasik, which message.log are you looking at? there are 3 different users who have submitted messages.log. My environment was using fresh userdir and see the last messages.log, it does not contain any of the other exceptions you mention.
Okay, reproduced with latest available trunk build: netbeans-hudson-trunk-346-javaee.zip Used fresh userdir (as always). jdk used: jdk1.5.0_13 Attaching message.log, screenshot, netbeans.cong steps to reproduce: 1) expand the zip file. 2) set netbeans conf 3) launch netbeans 4) create a project [ejb in my case]..exceptions occurs and observe that the main toolbar is gone.

I tested build 346, JDK 1.6.0, winXp. I started with clean userdir. I just started the IDE and waited, I did not even create a project or anything. FSIE is thrown and then the toolbar disappears. Will attach the log.

I think it has something to do with the continuous build. I may be wrong about this. When I build the netbeans on my own machine, I am not able to reproduce this. jtulach, did you use the deadlock trunk build (http://deadlock.netbeans.org/hudson/job/trunk/) to reproduce this issue?
This issue can be easily reproduced with a continues zip build. But I couldn't reproduce it with IDE which is installed by NB 6.1 installer. * NB 6.1 IDE (IDE1): Build 200802110004 (Downloaded this morning from http://bits.netbeans.org/download/trunk/nightly/2008-02-11_01-01-59/) * NB 6.1 continues zip IDE (IDE2): netbeans-hudson-trunk-348.zip (Downloaded this morning from http://deadlock.netbeans.org/hudson/job/trunk/348/artifact/nbbuild/dist/zip) Steps to reproduce it: 1. Install NB 6.1 IDE (IDE1) by using installer. glassfish is installed as well. 2. unzip netbeans-hudson-trunk-348.zip (IDE2) 3. set netbeans.conf file. Will use the same glassfish installed with IDE1. 4. start IDE2 netbeans IDE. 5. Follow the steps to Add new Server, until the "Unexpected Exception" pops up. (See attached screen shot AddServerError.png) 6. Click the "Close" button in the "Unexpected Exception" dialog. 7. The main tooltars in the IDE2 are all gone (see attached screen shot MissingMainToolbars.png) 8. message.log will be attached as well.
Per Venkat, this issue blocks JCAPS team to build their installer because they pick up the NB 6.1 zip to build JCAPS installer. We are not sure if it is an installer issue or a core issue. Please help to re-direct it to the right component if possible.

Lately, on Windows this exception happening with in few minutes of opening the IDE. Toolbar and Main menu are lost with that.
CB 362 (full IDE from zip), JDK 1.6.0_04, Win XP I tried adding Glassfish V2 via Add Server, I also tried creating a new EJB project (with a fresh userdir right after start), and I tried waiting several minutes without any activity after start with a fresh userdir. No exception was raised. Can anyone here in Prague reproduce the problem? QE?
I added glassfish server and created some projects but I cannot reproduce the problem with the following configuration: Product Version: NetBeans IDE Dev (Build 200802120006) Java: 1.6.0_02; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 1.6.0_02-b05 System: Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86; Cp1252; en_US (nb) I have tried also the same scenario with NetBeans daily build from 2008/02/01 but cannot reproduce:-(
juhrik: it cannot be reproduced in daily build (as HongLi says, Venkat and I also cannot reproduce it). ONLY in CONTINUOUS BUILD
I've tried to reproduce it without any success on Vista using supplied steps on these builds: Hudson trunk #364 full, trunk #365 javaee. My system info: Product Version: NetBeans IDE Dev (Build 20080212113322) Java: 1.6.0_10-ea; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 1.6.0_10-ea-b08 System: Windows Vista version 6.0 running on x86; Cp1250; cs_CZ (nb) Userdir: C:\Users\tester\.netbeans\dev-hud2 I've also tried creating various projects and ran IDE for a while. But still cannot reproduce.
Can it be the reason the production build is created using jdk1.5.0_12 and continues build is likely running on jdk1.5.0_13 (with some tests on jdk1.5.0_14)?
Hi Pchytil, Did try to add a new App Server instance?
Can`t reproduce with build #360, WinXP SP2 with a latest updates, tried both jdk1.5.0_14-b03 and jdk1.6.0_03-b05 (with clean userdir) Steps that I did: add server via Tools->Servers, created WebApp with VW JSF, added some components in Design view, play around with JSP views, created EJBModule and add simple business method in newly created Session Bean.
I hate to disappoint and upset everyone but something that is not: 1. based on official bits - as far as I know continuous build does not do clean and as such it can contains a lot of trash from previous compilation 2. reproducible in CET - I can see that there was some problem, and I can continue to add more logging into the code, but so far there is no chance to find what is wrong 3. broken even for reporters if they use official bits - at least that is what I see people report in last comments, e.g. everything is working does not qualify for P1. In fact, it does not qualify for a bug at all, imho. I am sure many will disagree, if so, please get next official build, run with logging enabled, attach your log file, if you see the failure, attach the log, attach your caches from $userdir/var/caches/all-* and reopen.
I just tested with build 376, it is reproducible. build 360 is no longer available. Will attach all the requested log files. Venkat, is it possible for your team to pick up an official bits instead of the CET like jtulach suggested?

Looks like I am not allow to attach more files. :(
Why are we closing this bug? The problem exists in continous builds. If this is not a code problem but happens only with continous builds, it needs to be assigned to the right group and fixed.
Moving to nbbuild (the closest match I found) until we find why it is being reproduced only on deadlock builds.

Re. "CET" - guys, if you reproduce the problem can you tell us what timezone you have on your computer? I know that sounds crazy, but so far nobody seen the problem in Europe, which is close to GMT, so maybe the bigger difference the bigger chances to observe it!?
Pacific Time. Now is Feb 13, 10:20am.
is it still reproducible with latest builds? Or did it disappear?
I guess it is not reproducible since I fixed issue 127239 *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 127239 ***
could somebody who was able to reproduce this issue please verify in the latest builds? this issue was P1. thank you
Confirmed with Venkat, the issue is no longer reproduced. I am closing it.
