I have tried to switch between projects in build 206 without any problem. If you
encounter the ide freeze again attach also thread dump please.

What version of zip format are your attachments? I cannot open them.

Hello Jan,
You wrote:

I'll attach projects again. As it stand now the freeze persists.

>If you encounter the ide freeze again attach also thread dump please.
Please advise where would I find the thread dump. I'll now also attach ide.log.

>What version of zip format are your attachments? I cannot open them.
Winzip 7.0. I cannot either, but if you first save file as .zip, they'll
open. I do not know how to attach zip file so I attached as text/plain, but
they're really .zip

Freeze happens like this;
start NB,
switch projects,
then 'status message' states 'Saving project xxxxxx ...'
then 'status message states 'Opening project yyyyyy ...'
at this point IDE is active however, closure was incomplete, i.e., explorer for
xxxxxx still visible but inoperative. And project yyyyyy does not open. I
also cannot close IDE, so I force it out with Windows task manager.

BTW, somehow I erroneously attached same file twice. So first two attachments
are duplicates.

Regards, Emmanuel

Emmanuel,
the thread dump is possible to obtain by pressing ctrl+break in MS Win command
prompt whence you started the ide.

You should attach zip files as "Binary file (application/octet-stream)". I have
not been able to unzip any attachment yet. The mime type text/plain is used for
text documents without formatting.

I hope it helps.

Hello Jan,

Thank you for help with zip attachment. Latest projext now correctly attached.

When I start thread dump with ctrl+break, where would I now find the dump so I
can attach it, please advise?

I have another piece of information. It seems when I switch projects it
freezes only when files are open in the source editor. When I close the source
editor, all seems ok. Should this be the case?

Regards, Emmanuel

Does it matter that the projects I'm 'switching to' have identical artifacts as
the project I'm 'switching from'? Could this be causing the freeze?
Comment 12 Jan Pokorsky 2001-06-12 11:15:14 UTC
Hi Emmanuel,

after pressing ctrl+break the thread dump will be printed to console whence you
started the ide.

I cannot reproduce the bug letting files open in the source editor.

What do you mean by 'identical artifacts'? If you create 2 new projects and
open same file in both and switch between them does the freeze occur?

Emmanuel, try to obtain the thread dump it would be very useful. Thanks

Hello Jan,

Thank you for your note and feedback.

I'm not currently at home to do thread dump.

But in the meantime, let me reply to what I can;

>after pressing ctrl+break the thread dump will be printed
>to console whence you started the ide.

Not sure how I'll do this with win2k. Have never started NB from console, but
I'll figure a way. Then a) once up and running or b) once NB freezes, do I
press ctrl+break? Another thing I've never done before is, once thread dump is
printed to console how would I make an attachment of it? Is there not a way to
do thread dump in win2k?

>What do you mean by 'identical artifacts'?

Project with identical filesystems.

>If you create 2 new projects and open same file in
>both and switch between them does the freeze occur?

It seems that even with one file open in project being switched from and none
open in project being switched to, the freeze is likely to occur - but not each
time. Freeze occurs on (n)th switch, I've not counted but say after 2nd switch
(having made some change to project), usually not first. Then also - hardly
ever without files open - but freeze has occured. BTW, I use CVS.

>Emmanuel, try to obtain the thread dump it would be very useful.

Will do, this evening and hopefully I am successful with thread dump.

Kind regards
Emmanuel

Freeze only happens when files open in Source Editor when switching projects -
however not always.

Could not reproduce when no files open.

All the best with this one!
Comment 16 emmanuel 2001-06-15 07:32:22 UTC
Hello Jan,
I notice that the 'default' project does not exist amongst my projects. Could
the freeze be related to, that somewhere along the line I 'lost' the 'default
project'? If so, should I recreate it? If so, how do I recreate it?
Kind regards
Emmanuel

Hello Jan,

I just noticed another thing. NB was again freezing up. Without changing
anything, I forced NB out with task manager as I've now become accustomed to
doing, rebooted win2k pro, started NB, and switched project at will without
problems.

Switching (without any problems) those exact same projects which resulting in
freezing up NB prior to rebooting.

From this I gather, that once it starts freezing some 'hangup' remains
somewhere. Then once I boot, it seems ok. I would really not like to boot
with each freeze.

I hope this assists you.

Kind regards
Emmanuel

Emmanuel,
it seems there was a deadlock in the Repository in the openide module. When
opening new project old mounted filesystems are removed, but events about
removing were fired from synchronized section in Repository class which is not
a very good practice. For detailed description see #12689 and #12716. It should
be fixed now. Try last build please.

Thanks for your interest

Jan

Resolved for 3.4.x or earlier, no new info since then -> closing.
