[ BUILD # : 200807101204 ] [ JDK VERSION : 1.5.* ] NetBeans needs higher resolution icon for eye-candy. 32x32 pixel icon is not looking good on a desktop that uses 48x48 or 64x64 or bigger icons.
Reassigning to "core".
Reassigning to installer for evaluation. Dmitry, which icon sizes are possible for you to set on user's desktop? If higher than what we have right now, we can ask Leos for the higher sizes.
havan, what icon are you talking about? could you please make a screenshot of it in the operation system environment? If you talk about the icon of NetBeans shortcut at desktop, then we use nb6.5/netbeans.png icon as is (on Linux).

I'm talking about the NetBeans icon on the desktop. 'netbeans.png' icon is 32x32 pixels. It would be nice to have between 32x32 and 128x128 pixel icons. I've attached a screenshot of the current look on a desktop that uses 64x64 pixel icons.
havan, thanks! reassigning back to core: this icon file is not the installer`s one.
please upgrade to java 1.6, we're setting a 48x48 icon for the main window in that case
Stanislav, I do believe that the issue is not about the wrong icon of the main window (when NetBeans running) but rather the icon that is shown on the desktop (even NB is not running). That`s likely ide.branding/release/netbeans.png icon.
it is up to UI team to design these kind of issues -> reassigning
In latest Ubuntu Unity icon looks nice in launcher, but blurred in application switcher, probably because icon in app switcher is bigger. Can`t this be fixed with svg icon?
The best way seems to be to deliver 128x128 png icon in netbeans installation folder : /netbeans-7.x.x/nb/netbeans.png Meanwhile you can manually download it on the web and paste it in this folder.
Still the case with 8.0.2, very noticeable using Gnome 3
Created attachment 159052 [details] Screenshot of icon created by the netbeans 8.1 installer in Gnome shell The icon is still low resolution and blurry in Gnome 3.18 on Fedora after installation.
There are two possibilities to get a more eye-candy icon in Gnome shell. 1a) cd ${netbeans_home}/nb 1b) extract an icon with higher resolution from the *.icns resource file icns2png -x -s 128x128 -d 32 netbeans.icns 1c) replace netbeans.png by netbeans_128x128x32.png or select for the desktop starter (or in alacarte) netbeans_128x128x32.png as icon 2a) select for the desktop starter (or in alacarte) ${netbeans_home}/nb/netbeans.icns as icon icns2png - install it from your repository (e.g. Debian: icnsutil, Fedora: libicns-utils) or get it from the source: http://icns.sourceforge.net/

+1 First thing I do when I install Netbeans on Ubuntu is replace the old icon with this file http://www.itzgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/NetBeans-Logo.png
