Having a document open in editor and having the focus there, when I check the option View/Synchronize Editor with Views, nothing actually happens. Only when I change focus somewhere else and back to editor (or to some other editor tab directly), the sync starts working.
Well, that's a bit questionable. By checking 'Synchronize Editor with Views' you just enable action that is being triggered by changing focus in editor and since you haven't changed focus in editor (only enabled the action) there is nothing to synchronize IMO.
Agreed this is a subjective matter. From my point of view, I was surprised it did not do something immediately. My thinking was "I am in editor of Main.java, I have turned on the sync feature, so why the hell I don't see it in the Projects tree. Perhaps the feature is broken?". I did not think about the feature as "triggered by focus change".
Setting issue to LATER, according to users feedback it could be reopened and fix considered.
