The nice ajax filtering allows a user to filter by owner but doesn't display the owner as a column in the list of results. Thus, if I search for owner "fo", I get some results back but I can't see if they are the owner that I'm looking for or are they somehow  matching but not what I need.

Yes, it's true. There should be some visual feedback for the sorting. Honzo, can you add the Owner column? Thanks!
