Description randahl 2004-04-14 11:06:36 UTC
The new feature which lets you switch between the
open windows using Ctrl+` does not work in Europe.
Many European countries have keyboard layouts
which differ from the US keyboard layout. Ordinary
keys like A-Z, 0-9, Ctrl, Tab, Shift, Enter, F1-12
are often all the same, but special character keys
differ. The upper left key which types a ´ on a US
keyboard types a ½ on a Danish keyboard, and the
key has a different key code.

Consequently users in Europe cannot use this new
feature out of the box. As a result many
developers will read the "Whats New in 3.6"
article and look in vain for the key used to
invoke this new feature.

I suggest you bind the feature to a key
combination which is more widely available. If you
chose Ctrl+Tab or Ctrl+Shift+Tab you would also
benefit from making the key combination look more
like the well known Alt+Tab which switches between
application windows.

Workaround: Locate the feature yourself in the
keyboard shortcut settings window and bind it to a
key combination which is available outside the US.

A side note: A few months ago a similar problem
arose as a netbeans developer bound a feature to
the Alt+7 key combination making it impossible to
type the { character in Germany, Denmark and other
european countries. With all do respect, I think
the developers and the QA people ought to pay more
attention to defining keyboard combinations that
work outside the US. You are developing a great
product and I think it deserves to work well
internationally. I truly hope you recognize the
importance of developing a tool which works
equally well outside the US.

Thank you for a great new release
