it is not possible to autoupdate updater.jar:

   Updating the updater.jar is not (supported).

Since updatersplash.gif is part of updater.jar,
this means that the splash image cannot be updated
in a patch later. To solve this issue, updater.jar
can read the gif from another known location. This
would allow us to update the file, in case a
problem was found in the gif.
