Fedora Core 2 Gnome 2.6 Metacity window manager using multiple workspaces. When switching workspaces, open netbeans windows in the workspace being switched from will sometimes minimize, apparently at random. When switching back to the netbeans workspace, the minimized window(s) can sometimes be brought back by Alt-Tabbing or selecting from the window list, but often cannot. The only way to maximize these windows is to re-selct them from the main netbeans window menu, then Alt-Tabbing or selecting from the window list.
Passing to Milos.
Passing to Martin to distribute bugs evenly. Thanks Martine :-)
Is this happening only with NetBeans or does it sometime happen with other applications too? With which JDK does it happen or it JDK independent? Are you using GTK or Metal L&F? And how often it is approximately happening? I just need more information to be able to reproduce it :) When you discover more circumstances let me know. Tnx.
here s my evaluation: gnome more or less behaves like a mad man when switching virtual desktops. It automatically minimizes all windows in the former desktop in no particular order. In Netbeans we have a feature (not sure how much it's important or required) that when minimizing the main window in SDI, we mimimize the whole app. when restoring it, all windows that were present at the time are restored again. As you can imagine, this pretty much clashes with the way gnome behaves on desktop switching. There's some heuristics applied to make it work in a relatively sane manner, but obviously it's not bulletproof. My suggestion is to get rid of the "Main window minimizes all windows" feature and just let all windows behave in the natural way. SDI is a lost case for other similar reasons anyway.
I've just gone back to using the multiple windows mode again. I've only ever used Java 1.5.0 and 1.5.0_01. What's the default L&F for Linux? I haven't specified any L&F. I'm now on Fedora Core 3. A brief testing, I can get the problem by minimising a window, switching to another desktop, and switching back. The minimised window won't come back.
Support for SDI mode was dropped and SDI mode was replaced by possibility of undock the window through Drag and Drop. This bug is hopefully obsolete now.
